The following secrets will help you succeed. Whether you want to expand your business or fine tune your skills, there is advice here to suit everyone.

Let’s get started.

How to find items to sell on eBay

The first ‘secret’ is gathering items to sell and knowing what sells and what doesn’t.

Look around your home. There will most likely be lots of unused items that you can sell on eBay and make money. Do a spot of ‘spring cleaning’ and declutter your home. Once you do, chances are you will be looking large pile of bits and pieces.

This could include anything and everything from:

  • Clothing and shoes
  • Belts, ties and scarves
  • Books and magazines
  • Boardgames, toys and puzzles
  • Garden furniture, tools and plants
  • Paintings and frames
  • Computer software, cables, parts and pieces
  • DVDs, XBox Games
  • And the list goes on.

Group all of your items into ‘New’, ‘Used’, ‘Broken / Parts only‘ and my advice now is to research research research! Yes, even broken bits and pieces sell.

eBay has a fantastic search tool. Search on eBay for similar items to the ones you are hoping to sell, and choose ‘Completed‘ sales and this will show you the selling history.

  • Have similar items sold previously?
  • What prices have they fetched?
  • How were they photographed?
  • What condition were they?

This kind of information will help you ascertain the starting price for an item, whether there is demand for it and it will give you an idea as to how people write descriptions for similar items.

Research Research Research!

Photograph, Description and Away we go!

Once you have completed your research, take your photos. Best to use natural light and backgrounds that provide good contrast.

The title of your listing is critical for success. This is one of my biggest secrets to you. The limited space you have and the way you use this space will not only help your listing stand out in the eBay crowd, but also make sure that it is picked up by search engines so that if people do a search on the internet for an item similar to yours they may actually be returned a result which is an eBay auction link. Bingo! Make sure you read all about my 5 secrets to ensuring your eBay listing is seen.

Write descriptions that are meaningful. Provide measurements for clothing. Describe colours, textures.

  • Be sure to add ANY imperfections. No matter how small.
  • Be honest, be open and be friendly.

For details on any or all of these aspects, take a look at my eBay guide to business success.

There is no need to watch your ebay items listed for sale ever minute of the day – although often I do as I am excited to see if there are people watching them and bidding – but what I do strongly suggest is to be on the lookout for questions.

If you receive a question from a fellow ebay member relating to the product, postage or any other specific be prompt in your reply. It goes a long way!

Make sure you adjust your settings so that you are notified via email (or sms alert if you prefer) when there is any movement on your items.
